William Troost-Ekong impresses in Al Kholood debut, but late Houssem Aouar goal thwarts strong defensive effort against Karim Benzema
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong experienced a frustrating debut for his new club, Al Kholood, as they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Al Ittihad in their Saudi Pro League opener.
Troost-Ekong had just completed his move to Al Kholood after a year with Greek champions PAOK and was immediately thrust into action against a star-studded Al Ittihad side featuring the likes of Fabinho, N’Golo Kanté, and Karim Benzema.
The Nigerian international anchored a solid defensive display for 94 minutes, keeping Al Ittihad’s high-profile attackers at bay. However, in the dying seconds of the game, Algerian midfielder Houssem Aouar broke the deadlock, securing the victory for the visitors.
Despite the late setback, Al Kholood can take pride in their performance as they embark on their first season in the Saudi Pro League following promotion from the FDL. The Ar Rass-based side will look to bounce back in their next match against Al Riyadh on August 29.
Troost-Ekong’s experience will be vital for Al Kholood as they aim to establish themselves in the top flight and avoid relegation. The 30-year-old defender, who previously played for Udinese, Watford, and Salernitana, was also named Most Valuable Player at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he led Nigeria to a silver medal finish.
