Wightman’s Olympic Dreams Shattered, Pulls Out of Games
Jack Whiteman of Britain, who won the 800m gold medal, has withdrawn from the Paris Olympics because of a hamstring injury.
The 2022 1500m world champion, 30, has been replaced by Elliot Giles. Wightman’s won the 800m silver medal at the 2022 European Championships, he suffered a foot injury in January 2023 that prevented him from defending his world title in Budapest that summer.
He missed the British Championships in June because of a calf problem, Wightman said ahead of the Olympics that the injury would not affect his ability to win medals.
“You don’t lose the good you have,” he said. “If you don’t go out and show the good you have, people forget about it. “For me, being able to go out in the light, without the stress of everyone, that’s important to me.
It’s better to go out on August 10 and win or be the best in the world.
