Trabzonspor Renew Interest in Paul Onuachu Ahead of Potential January Transfer

Trabzonspor, a leading club in the Turkish Super Lig, is reportedly revisiting its interest in Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu, who currently plays for Southampton.

Onuachu, who was part of Nigeria’s squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, spent the previous season on loan at Trabzonspor. During his loan spell, the 30-year-old striker made a significant impact, netting 17 goals and providing four assists in 25 league appearances, before an injury curtailed his season.

Trabzonspor had initially sought to make the move permanent over the summer, but negotiations fell through due to a disagreement on the transfer fee. Southampton, who signed Onuachu from Club Brugge in the winter transfer window of 2023, were holding out for a higher fee than Trabzonspor was willing to offer. As a result, Onuachu remained at Southampton, where he has made just one appearance under manager Martin Russell this season.

According to reports from *Taka Gazette*, Southampton has recently reopened discussions with Trabzonspor regarding a potential deal during the January transfer window. Trabzonspor remains interested in securing Onuachu’s services, provided an agreement can be reached on the financial terms.

During the last round of negotiations, Southampton was seeking a fee in the region of €9 million, which Trabzonspor was reluctant to match. However, given the Turkish club’s current struggles in attack, they may prioritize acquiring a proven goal scorer like Onuachu. In their first seven league games this season, Trabzonspor has managed only one victory and scored just seven goals, underlining the need for reinforcements in the forward position.

A deal in January could offer the Turkish club a much-needed boost as they look to improve their form and challenge for a higher position in the league standings.
