Super Eagles’ Moses Simon Shares Reasons for Favoring Eguavoen Over Foreign Coaches
Nigerian winger Moses Simon has expressed his thoughts on the recent coaching situation with the Super Eagles, highlighting the difference between having a foreign coach and interim coach Augustine Eguavoen.
Simon’s comments reveal a sense of uncertainty among the players regarding the appointment of Bruno Labbadia, who was initially named as technical adviser for Nigeria’s matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
Due to unresolved tax issues, the Nigerian Football Federation could not finalize terms with Labbadia, resulting in Eguavoen’s return as interim coach. Speaking in a recent interview, Simon noted the positive atmosphere within the team under Eguavoen, attributing it to the coach’s familiarity with the squad.
“The mood is better because coach Eguavoen knows the players and understands the role he has to play,” Simon remarked. “He instills confidence in the team. On the other hand, we didn’t know the foreign coach (Labbadia), his tactics, or his style of management. You could have top players on the bench without understanding why.”
Simon emphasized that Eguavoen’s close ties with the team and his continued involvement with the federation have been crucial. “Even though he wasn’t the head coach, Eguavoen has remained connected to the team and understands what’s happening both within the squad and in Nigerian football.”
Ahead of Nigeria’s crucial match against Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Simon stressed the importance of securing a victory to uplift the fans. “We know what’s at stake. We don’t want to lose again. The team is determined to win and bring joy to Nigerians, especially after past disappointments.”
The Super Eagles are set to face Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 5:00 pm in Uyo.
