Super Eagles Duo Set Sights on Redemption Against Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic
Super Eagles stars Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi have expressed their determination to make amends and seek revenge against Benin Republic when the two teams meet in their upcoming AFCON 2025 Qualifiers clash.
The duo featured in last month’s FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic, where Nigeria initially took the lead through Raphael Onyedika but eventually fell 2-1 after a spirited second-half performance by Gernot Rohr’s side at the Olympic Stadium in Ivory Coast.
With both teams now drawn into the same group for the AFCON qualifiers, Iwobi and Ndidi have made it clear they are more motivated than ever to secure a positive result. Reflecting on the previous encounter, Ndidi admitted Nigeria underperformed but assured fans that they are ready to turn things around.
“We know we didn’t meet our expectations in the World Cup qualifiers, but we’re determined to set things right in Uyo,” Ndidi said in an interview with the Super Eagles media team. “They got the win in Abidjan, but we’re prepared for what’s to come. We’re ready,” added the Leicester City midfielder.
Iwobi echoed his teammate’s resolve, emphasizing the importance of showing the team’s true potential on the pitch.
“There’s still so much to play for, and we have a lot to prove,” Iwobi stated. “We know the quality in this squad, and we have to bring it to the field, just like we do at our clubs. The fans have high expectations, and so do we. We’re focused on getting the points needed to qualify,” the Fulham forward asserted.
Nigeria will face Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7, before traveling to Rwanda for their next encounter just three days later.
