Russia Reports Second Consecutive Night of Ukrainian Drone Attacks Near Moscow
Russian authorities reported a second consecutive night of drone attacks targeting Moscow, allegedly launched by Ukrainian forces. According to Rosaviatsia, the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, all four major airports in the capital were temporarily shut down as a precaution but have since resumed operations.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that at least 19 drones were intercepted before reaching the city, approaching from various directions. He noted that debris from the intercepted drones fell onto a major highway leading into Moscow, though no injuries were reported.
Ukraine has not officially responded to the claims. However, the mayor of Kharkiv, in northeastern Ukraine, confirmed that Russian drones targeted his city overnight, as well as areas surrounding the capital, Kyiv.
In addition to Moscow, officials from Penza and Voronezh regions also reported overnight drone incursions. Some unofficial reports from Russian military bloggers claimed that an apartment window in southern Moscow had been damaged.
This incident follows a similar event reported the previous night, during which Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed 26 Ukrainian drones were neutralized.
Drone attacks on Moscow have increased since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago. One of the most significant incidents occurred in March, when a drone strike resulted in three fatalities.
These latest developments coincide with reports of renewed Ukrainian military activity in Russia’s Kursk region. Ukrainian military officials stated that their forces struck a drone command post near the village of Tyotkino on Sunday.
Although Russian officials claimed to have reasserted control over the Kursk region in April—nine months after a Ukrainian incursion—Kyiv maintains that its troops continue to operate within Russian territory.
Further incidents were reported in the Kursk town of Rylsk, where an electrical substation lost power following an alleged Ukrainian attack. Two transformers were reportedly damaged, and two teenagers were injured by shrapnel, according to regional acting governor Alexander Khinshtein.
Russian military bloggers suggested that Ukrainian troops had attempted to breach the border near Tyotkino, sharing unverified images of vehicles navigating tank traps. They described a heavy exchange of fire following the destruction of bridges and an attempted incursion involving armored vehicles and mine-clearing units.
Ukraine’s Defense Forces issued a statement asserting their continued military presence in the Kursk region, emphasizing the strategic intent behind their operations, which they claim aim to create a buffer zone to protect northeastern Ukraine, particularly Sumy.
Local authorities in Sumy have reportedly urged evacuations from two nearby settlements due to escalating hostilities, according to Reuters.
