Raheem Sterling Breaks Champions League Record in Arsenal’s Clash Against Atalanta
Raheem Sterling made Champions League history during Arsenal’s recent match against Atalanta, marking a significant milestone in his career. Currently on loan at Arsenal from Chelsea, Sterling made his first appearance for the Gunners in their 1-0 win against Tottenham. He came on as a substitute in the 72nd minute of the match, and manager Mikel Arteta brought him on again in their first Champions League fixture of the season against Atalanta, which ended in a goalless draw.

By stepping onto the pitch at the Gewiss Stadium in the 72nd minute, Sterling became the first player to represent four different English clubs in the history of the Champions League.
Sterling’s Champions League journey began in 2014 with Liverpool, where he played six matches, including a 2-0 victory against Ludogorets in the group stage. He later moved to Manchester City in 2015, where he made 67 Champions League appearances and scored 24 goals. Sterling was instrumental in helping City reach their first final in 2021, though they were defeated 1-0 by Chelsea. After joining Chelsea in 2022, Sterling made nine appearances in the Champions League, netting three goals and providing one assist.
In his latest outing for Arsenal, Sterling almost made an immediate impact, setting up a chance for teammate Gabriel Martinelli, though the Brazilian’s shot went over the crossbar. Arsenal had their own narrow escape when David Raya saved a penalty from Mateo Retegui and brilliantly denied him on the rebound.
Arsenal will now turn their attention to upcoming Champions League fixtures, where they will face Paris Saint-Germain and Shakhtar Donetsk, as they aim to improve on their quarter-final exit last season. Sterling, a four-time Premier League winner, is still searching for his first Champions League title.
