Producer of The Matrix Franchise Files for Bankruptcy
The situation between Village RoadShow and Warner Bros. (WB) has been a challenging one, rooted in several factors that span from legal disputes to broader industry struggles.
The core issue began with the release of The Matrix Resurrections on HBO Max, where Village RoadShow claimed that WB had excluded it from any future rights or opportunities related to sequels or prequels of films the companies had worked on together. This led to a costly legal battle, with Village RoadShow incurring over $18 million in legal fees, nearly all of which remain unpaid. The dispute has caused irreparable damage to their once-strong partnership, according to Keith Maib, Village RoadShow’s chief restructuring officer.
The company was also burdened by a failed studio business venture launched in 2018. Despite its efforts to produce independent films and television series, none of these projects delivered any profits. To make matters worse, Village RoadShow, like many film companies, faced additional challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the industry and the disruption caused by the ongoing strike action by Hollywood actors and writers, which started in May 2023. This all culminated in a situation where, in December, the Writers Guild of America banned its members from working with Village RoadShow over alleged non-payment to its contributors.
This series of setbacks has left the company in a difficult financial position and has severely undermined its reputation within the entertainment industry.
