Police invite NLC President Ajaero Again
In a developing story, the Nigeria Police Force has once again summoned the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, and the union’s Secretary General, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja. This latest invitation, dated August 28, 2024, comes less than 24 hours after Ajaero honored a previous police summons.
The police have requested that Ajaero and Ugboaja appear at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on September 5, 2024. According to the invitation letter signed by the Commissioner of Police, Operations, Ibitoye Alajide, the NLC leaders are to answer questions regarding allegations of criminal intimidation, malicious damage to properties, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.
This fresh summons follows a series of allegations against Ajaero, including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. Despite these serious accusations, Ajaero has maintained his innocence, describing the allegations as baseless and asserting that the Labour movement cannot be intimidated.
Addressing journalists after his recent visit to the Force Headquarters, Ajaero emphasized the NLC’s commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian workers. He declared that the union would not be cowed by any form of intimidation and reiterated the NLC’s role as a patriotic organization dedicated to the welfare of its members.
The situation remains tense as the NLC prepares for the upcoming police interview, with many watching closely to see how events will unfold.
