NiMet Warns of Potential Urban Flooding as Heavy Rains Loom Over Major Cities
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued an urgent advisory, warning residents in major cities to steer clear of flood-prone areas as heavy downpours are expected to trigger urban flooding in the coming days.
According to NiMet’s weather forecast released on Wednesday in Abuja, the nation is set to experience thundery and rainy conditions from Thursday through Saturday. The agency predicts isolated thunderstorms in the morning over parts of Kebbi, Sokoto, Taraba, Gombe, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, and Adamawa states, with these storms intensifying across additional northern states, including Borno, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Yobe, Zamfara, Bauchi, and Gombe, later in the day.
The North Central region isn’t spared, with moderate rains anticipated over Niger State in the morning, followed by rains in the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue states in the afternoon and evening. Similarly, the southern region is expected to face intermittent rains over states like Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River.
Friday and Saturday are expected to follow a similar pattern, with thunderstorms and rain showers forecasted across various regions of the country. NiMet has particularly highlighted the risk of urban flooding in major cities, advising residents to avoid flood-prone areas and take necessary precautions against potential hazards.
“Strong winds may accompany the rains, especially in areas likely to experience thunderstorms,” the agency cautioned. “We urge the public to adhere to safety advisories issued by relevant authorities and stay informed through weather updates.”
NiMet also advised airline operators to obtain updated weather reports for effective operational planning, given the expected weather disruptions.
As the nation braces for this wave of heavy rains, residents are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety in the face of these weather challenges.
