Mourinho’s Harsh Decision: Ex- Chelsea Striker Opens Up About Being Denied Premier League Medal

Chelsea won the title in 2005/06 but not all Blues players were remembered for that achievement… The 2005/06 season was another brilliant one for Chelsea, their second Premier League win.

However, not all members of Mourinho’s team received the award, Carlton Cole made nine appearances that season and it was his last for the Blues, the striker did not look back on the title.

In an exclusive interview with FourFourTwo, Cole took aim at Mourinho after his successful season at Chelsea failed to win a trophy. In fact, he described it as the “lowest point” of his time at Stamford Bridge.

When asked about the highs and lows of his career, Cole told the Financial Times: “My first game for Chelsea in 2002, a 3-0 win against Everton, was a big one for me. Episode I came on as a substitute for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and the music I got from the home fans made me feel successful and happy because I knew how hard I had worked to get to this stage.

The lowest point came on the last day of the 2005/06 season,”We won the league under Mourinho but I didn’t play the last three games of the season because he didn’t want me to win the Premier League.

All I wanted to do was play two games but Jose wouldn’t let me do it, he didn’t think I deserved the award so in the end I didn’t get it.” Cole left Chelsea in the summer for West Ham where he had the best year of his career.

The East London season helped the Hammers win the Championship play-offs in 2011/12 and return to the top flight. Cole played seven times for the England national team between 2009 and 2010, before playing for Celtic, American side Sacramento Republic and Indonesia’s Persibu Bandung (in a particularly ill-fated move) before ending his career. He hung up his boots in 2017 and then returned to West Ham United as a youth coach.
