McLaren makes unexpected move to become the coach of Jamaica

In a surprise move, Steve McLaren has resigned as assistant manager of Manchester United to become manager of Jamaica.

The 62-year-old Englishman, who was a key member of Eric Ten Hag’s coaching staff at Old Trafford, has opted for a new challenge in the Caribbean. McClaren’s departure from Manchester United is surprising because of his impact on the team’s play and his role in building the club’s academy.

But the lure of international duty and the opportunity to take Jamaica to the 2026 World Cup has proven too hard to resist, McLaren’s experience and skills in developing youngsters will be valuable assets for the Reggae Boys.

The Jamaica Football Federation has made significant progress in securing McLaren’s services, his appointment is a statement of purpose and reflects the country’s desire to be a major force in CONCACAF and beyond.

McLaren’s top priority is to analyze the current system and identify areas for improvement. He has a solid foundation with experienced players and young talent. McClaren’s skillful and attacking coaching style seems to suit the talent and creativity of the Jamaican team.

Experience of managing teams in crisis situations will also be important in dealing with the complexities of international football, McLaren hopes to progress rapidly as he begins his new era with international competitions and qualifying in Jamaica.

Erik ten Hag said in a statement:

“I want to thank Steve for his tremendous service over the past two years. He has been an invaluable source of support and advice to me since I arrived in English football, helping us achieve two trophies while laying down foundations for further success.”

Manchester United fans will be saddened by McClaren’s departure, but the club’s loss will be Jamaica’s gain, McClaren’s departure also gives the Red Devils the chance to revamp their coaching staff and introduce new ideas.
