Man Utd icon Andy Cole criticizes fans for ‘disappointing’ treatment of Marcus Rashford, calls relationship with local star ‘surreal’

Manchester United supporters are growing increasingly frustrated with Marcus Rashford as the club struggles to gain momentum in the Premier League under Erik ten Hag.

Despite being a key player, Rashford has found himself under scrutiny for his performances, having netted only eight goals across all competitions since the beginning of the 2023-24 season. The 26-year-old forward has become a target for criticism amid United’s dip in form.

However, former United striker Andy Cole has come to Rashford’s defense, expressing disappointment over how the Manchester-born player is being treated by some sections of the fanbase. In an interview with Betfred, Cole said, “It’s disappointing. With Marcus being a local boy and considering how long I’ve been involved with the club, this is the first time I’ve seen a player from Manchester have this kind of relationship with the fans. It’s surreal because usually, fans rally behind one of their own and the team as a whole.”

Cole went on to suggest that there may be personal issues affecting Rashford’s game, though he refrained from speculating further. “Nobody knows what’s really going on with him. It could be something personal affecting his football. Marcus needs to get back to basics, and the only way he can win the fans over again is through his performances, goals, and by showing the form he had a couple of seasons ago,” Cole added.

Rashford demonstrated his ability to be one of the Premier League’s standout talents under Ten Hag just two seasons ago, registering 40 goal contributions in 56 matches during the 2022-23 campaign. However, he has struggled to replicate that level of output this season.

With Rashford recently omitted from the England squad, he now has the opportunity to refocus and prepare for Manchester United’s upcoming domestic fixtures. Their next two matches, against Southampton and Crystal Palace, could prove pivotal in shaping the club’s 2024-25 season.
