Lekki Toll Gate Arrests Spark Outrage on X as Protesters Are Freed
The Lekki Toll Gate has ignited a social media firestorm on X following the arrest of protesters there and in various parts of Lagos. The detainees were reportedly taken to Panti police station after being apprehended by thugs and handed over to the police.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong announced the successful release of 12 protesters, sharing photos and details of their ordeal. According to Effiong, the protesters were initially seized by thugs at the Toll Gate before being transferred to police custody. Effiong, along with a team of pro bono lawyers under the banner of Lawyers for Rule of Law and Human Rights, worked tirelessly to secure their release.
In his post, Effiong stated, “Our team of pro bono lawyers have just secured the release of 12 protesters who were arrested by the police at the Lekki Toll Gate and other parts of Lagos. Most of them were grabbed by thugs at the Toll Gate and handed over to the police. We met with the Commissioner of Police earlier today at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park and complained about the ongoing arbitrary arrest of protesters in Lagos. The CP then directed us to Panti where the protesters were detained and instructed the DCP, Panti to release them. The protesters were accordingly released to me and my colleagues.”
Effiong also mentioned ongoing efforts to assist detained protesters in other states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He provided a list of the released protesters, affirming that “History will vindicate the just.”
The incident has intensified the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, with calls for justice and accountability continuing to grow louder across the nation.
