Lagos Authorities to Prosecute Owner of Collapsed Building Amid Flood Crisis
The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA) has announced plans to prosecute the owner of a collapsed two-storey building in Mushin. Gbolahan Oki, General Manager of LABSCA, stated that the building at 12 Cameron Street, Ewenla, Mushin, was constructed with substandard materials and violated a previous stop-work order.
Oki revealed that the owner had broken a government seal to continue illegal construction. A preliminary investigation confirmed the use of substandard materials, leading to the collapse which affected a nearby bungalow.
LABSCA spokesperson Olaoye Olusegun detailed that actions could include demolition of other defective structures within the compound, prosecution, and seizure of the property to address the situation.
Oki urged residents to obtain proper permits and warned against removing government seals on defective buildings, emphasizing the risks to public safety.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported rescuing seven people—three females and four males—trapped in the collapsed building.
Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed that the LASEMA Response Team has thoroughly searched the rubble and found no additional victims. The area has been secured, and operations are ongoing.
