Labour Party chieftain Linus Okorie has condemned the actions of the Federal Government and the police, asserting that they cannot silence Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero. In a statement to journalists in Abakaliki, Okorie expressed his dismay over the alleged intimidation and arrest of Ajaero by security agencies. He criticized the use of internal security and police forces in what he described as a politically motivated move to suppress dissent.
Okorie highlighted the recent national hunger protests, during which there were widespread reports of police brutality, including fatalities. Amnesty International reported that 13 people were killed on the first day of the protests, calling for an investigation into the incidents. The NLC, led by Ajaero, has been vocal about these issues, further straining relations with the government.
The Labour Party has been facing internal challenges, with the NLC playing a crucial role in its leadership transition. Okorie accused the government of orchestrating attacks on the NLC and its leadership to undermine their efforts to establish a strong alternative political platform for Nigerians. He emphasized that such actions are characteristic of authoritarian regimes and warned against the erosion of democratic principles in the country.
