Kogi Among Six Nigerian States with Mild Cholera Outbreak, Records Two Cases

Kogi State is one of six Nigerian states experiencing a mild cholera outbreak, with only two confirmed cases reported. Health Commissioner Abdullazeez Adam disclosed this in Lokoja, noting that one patient has been discharged, while the other is responding well to treatment.

Adam acknowledged the widespread nature of the cholera epidemic, which has affected 31 states and Abuja. However, he emphasized that Kogi’s situation is not at an epidemic level.

“Only two cases of cholera have been confirmed in Kogi. Samples were taken, and confirmation was obtained through laboratory culture,” Adam said.

The state government has implemented measures to control the outbreak. “We have been sensitizing and educating our people on the importance of good hygiene, living in clean environments, drinking safe water, and avoiding open defecation,” the commissioner added. He identified open defecation, contaminated water, and unsanitary conditions as the primary causes of cholera and assured the public that efforts are ongoing to mitigate these risks.
