Jude Bellingham receives a one-match suspension, but it won’t affect his eligibility to play in the Euro 2024 quarterfinal match against Switzerland.
After scoring a fine equalizer in stoppage time in the last 16 tie, Bellingham filmed a video showing him retreating when he was spotted on the Slovakia bench.
England’s Euro 2024 quarter-final match against Switzerland has been postponed, save for a controversial celebration after scoring against Slovakia in the previous tournament. European football’s governing body, UEFA, said in a statement that Bellingham would be fined 30,000 euros ($32,477) and “suspended for the entire duration of a UEFA competition, otherwise subject to unfair “simple rules”: “The above suspension will not be immediate and the decision here is He will be subject to a probationary period of one (1) year from the date of issuance.” He was filmed clutching his crotch when seen on the Slovakia bench.
Bellingham is almost certain to start for England in Düsseldorf on Saturday night after being suspended by UEFA’s ethics and disciplinary committees. While Real Madrid’s star scored two goals in four matches in Germany, England could not reach the quarter-finals. Of all the cup favourites, England are on the other side of the cup, beating Switzerland on a remarkable 58-year winning streak. Switzerland beat Italy in the last 16 and earned a good draw in group A with hosts Germany, and a win for Switzerland will see them face either Turkey or the Netherlands in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Germany will face Spain and Portugal will face France. England reached the final of the European Championship under Gareth Southgate and made significant progress in the previous two World Cups, but failed to reach the final in 2018 and finished well in the quarter-finals in Qatar four years later.
