Jay-Jay Okocha Names the Dribbler He Considers Superior to Himself
Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, the legendary Super Eagles player, has recently emphasized his belief in his dribbling prowess, asserting that he ranks among the best in football history. In a candid interview, he overlooked renowned talents such as Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Vinicius Junior when asked to compare his skills with contemporary players.
While Okocha did not amass numerous individual accolades during his career, his influence on the pitch was undeniable. He was celebrated for his extraordinary ability to navigate through defenders with remarkable finesse. His tenure at Turkish club Fenerbahçe was particularly notable, where he not only shone individually but also played a role in developing future stars, including Mesut Özil.
Throughout his career, Okocha also represented prestigious clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, Bolton Wanderers, and Hull City, before concluding his professional journey in 2012. Since his retirement, Nigeria has yet to produce a player who possesses his unique dribbling style.
When prompted to identify current players who match his dribbling capabilities, Okocha declined to name stars like Messi, Neymar, Victor Osimhen, Cristiano Ronaldo, and others. He confidently stated, “Of course, I was the best dribbler; that was my strength.”
In recent years, Neymar has emerged as a player with comparable flair, while on the Nigerian scene, Chidera Ejuke has occasionally demonstrated similar dribbling talent.
