IPI Nigeria Condemns Arrest of Journalist Adejuwon Soyinka by DSS in Lagos

Adejuwon-Soyinka

The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has expressed strong disapproval over the arrest of Adejuwon Soyinka, the Regional Editor for West Africa at The Conversation Africa and the founding Editor of BBC Pidgin Service. According to reports, officers from the Department of State Security (DSS) apprehended Soyinka at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Sunday, August 25, 2024. His arrest occurred shortly after he arrived in Nigeria via a Virgin Atlantic flight from the United Kingdom.

As of now, the security agency has not provided any reason for Soyinka’s detention. All attempts to contact him have proven unsuccessful, leaving friends and colleagues concerned about his well-being. The IPI Nigeria calls for transparency and urges the DSS to release Soyinka’s passport promptly.

The incident highlights the importance of press freedom and the need to protect journalists who play a crucial role in informing the public and holding those in power accountable. The IPI Nigeria stands firm in its demand for justice and the safeguarding of journalists’ rights.
