INEC Chairman Affirms Capacity for Local Government Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu, has reiterated the commission’s readiness to conduct local government elections across Nigeria. Speaking before the National Assembly Joint Committee on the INEC and Electoral Committees, Yakubu emphasized that INEC possesses the necessary competence, human resources, and experience to manage elections in the country’s 774 Councils.

Yakubu cited the successful conduct of elections in the Federal Capital Territory Area Councils as evidence of INEC’s capabilities. He called for constitutional amendments to empower INEC to handle additional responsibilities, including local government elections.

The commission’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and efficiency remains steadfast as it seeks to strengthen democratic processes at the grassroots level.
