“I gave everything” – Barcelona icon officially retires from international football
Luis Suarez has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a distinguished career with the Uruguayan national team. The 37-year-old forward, who was a pivotal figure for Uruguay since his debut in 2007, made the announcement during an emotional press conference.
Suarez, Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 142 appearances, has represented his country in four World Cups (2010, 2014, 2018, 2022) and was instrumental in their 2011 Copa America triumph. His contributions have solidified his place among the nation’s football legends.
“Friday will be my last match for the national team,” Suarez revealed, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to retire on his own terms. “The fact that I made this decision and that it wasn’t due to injuries or being dropped brings me great comfort.”
Reflecting on his international career, Suarez added, “It’s difficult, but I find peace knowing that I gave everything until the very end. That passion never faded.”
Considered one of the finest South American players of the 21st century, Suarez also left a lasting mark at Barcelona. During his six-year tenure at the club, he scored nearly 200 goals in 283 matches and formed part of the legendary ‘MSN’ trio with Lionel Messi and Neymar.
Although he is stepping away from international football, Suarez continues his club career at Inter Miami, where he is reunited with former Barcelona teammates including Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba.
