Governor Otu Reaffirms Commitment to Addressing IDPs Challenges in Cross River

In a significant move to alleviate the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Cross River State, Governor Senator Prince Bassey Otu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by these vulnerable populations. This was highlighted during the recent flag-off ceremony for the distribution of relief materials to IDPs from Belegete Community in Obanliku Local Government Area.

The event, held on Monday, saw the collaboration between the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, represented by his Head of Personal Staff, Dr. Chris Ojikpong, officiated the ceremony. He emphasized the administration’s dedication to ensuring the welfare of its citizens, particularly those displaced by conflicts and crises.

In his remarks, Deputy Governor Odey underscored the importance of the government’s role in providing humanitarian assistance and seeking lasting solutions to the issues faced by IDPs. He urged the joint committee overseeing the distribution to ensure that the relief materials reach those directly affected and are used effectively to alleviate their hardships. He also commended the security agencies for their efforts in maintaining peace and stability in the area, assuring continued government support until the displaced residents can safely return home.

The Director General of Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Apostle (Hon) James Anam, expressed gratitude to the Belegete people for their patience and peaceful conduct following the horrific attacks by Ambazonian separatists. He described the incidents as “inhuman and totally unacceptable,” leading to the loss of lives and the destruction of farmlands. Anam also appreciated the support of the Red Cross Society of Nigeria, NEMA, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for their collaborative efforts in providing food, non-food items, and logistical support as part of the relief measures.

Governor Otu’s administration has shown a strong commitment to addressing humanitarian issues in Cross River State, with a focus on ensuring the welfare and safety of all citizens. The recent distribution of relief materials is a testament to the government’s proactive approach in tackling the challenges faced by IDPs and fostering a sense of hope and stability within the affected communities.
