Global Warming Is Real: Lagos Government Issues Flood Alert

The Lagos State Government has issued an urgent call to action in response to the escalating threat of flooding. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the need for robust flood defenses and collective commitment to sustainable environmental practices. In a statement released on X.com, Wahab warned that Lagos faces a critical juncture, grappling with rising sea levels and increasing flood risks.
Wahab highlighted the clear scientific evidence supporting global warming. Erratic weather patterns and rising sea levels translate to heavier rainfall, more powerful storms, and a growing threat to coastal communities. Recent images of entire neighborhoods submerged and desperate struggles for survival against unforgiving currents underscore the urgency of the situation.
“The science is clear,” Wahab stated. “Our planet is warming, causing erratic weather patterns and rising sea levels. This translates to heavier rainfall, more powerful storms, and a growing threat to coastal communities. We’ve seen it recently, haven’t we?! The heart-wrenching images of entire neighborhoods underwater, the desperate struggle for survival against the unforgiving current.”
Lagos, a vibrant city known for commerce and culture, now stands at a crossroads. The rising sea level poses a direct threat to its foundation. Immediate action is imperative to safeguard infrastructure, homes, and most importantly, people. Wahab urged collective commitment to sustainable practices and emphasized that global warming is real.
“Now is the time to act,” he declared. “We need robust flood defenses and a collective commitment to sustainable environmental practices. We must protect our infrastructure, our homes, and most importantly, our people. Ensure you keep your environment clean at all times and do not engage in any activity that can hinder the free flow of water.”
