Former Real Madrid manager Capello believes Lookman could make Atalanta serious Scudetto contenders

Former Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello believes Atalanta could become a serious contender in the Serie A title race if they manage to keep Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman.

Atalanta BC, historically without a Scudetto title, have been experiencing a golden period under the leadership of Gian Piero Gasperini. The club recently celebrated winning their first European trophy after defeating Bayer Leverkusen to claim the Europa League title in May.

In addition, Atalanta secured a fourth-place finish in Serie A, earning them a spot in the UEFA Champions League. Lookman played a pivotal role in the team’s success, notably scoring a hat-trick in the Europa League final.

The Nigerian international, previously with Leicester City and RB Leipzig, contributed 11 goals and eight assists to Atalanta’s Serie A campaign last season. His outstanding form has caught the attention of top European clubs like PSG, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City.

Despite the interest, Atalanta has yet to receive a formal offer for Lookman, who appears poised to stay in Bergamo for the 2024/25 season. Capello believes that retaining Lookman could be key to Atalanta’s domestic success.

Capello shared with La Gazzetta dello Sport, via Calcio Atalanta, “I was impressed by Atalanta’s transfer moves, especially with Bellanova’s arrival. And if Lookman stays, Gasperini’s side will be one to watch.”

Atalanta began their Serie A campaign with a 4-0 victory over Lecce but suffered a setback with a 2-1 defeat to Torino on matchday two.
