FIFA U20 World Cup: Germany 3-1 Nigeria – Falconets falter in second group match following tough opening game
Nigeria’s Super Falconets suffered a 3-1 defeat to Germany in their second match of the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Following a promising start with a 1-0 victory over South Korea in their opening game at Estadio El Techo in Bogotá, the Super Falconets showed promise under the guidance of coach Christopher Danjuma. However, their clash with Germany posed a significant challenge, as the European side has historically proven difficult for Nigeria at this level.
Germany opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Alara Sehitler. While Nigeria was not outplayed and created several opportunities, they were unable to convert them into goals. The Falconets eventually found an equalizer in the 51st minute, with Chiamaka Okwuchukwu scoring for Nigeria.
However, Germany responded quickly, regaining the lead just 10 minutes later through Sofie Zdebel. In stoppage time, Sarah Ernst added a third for Germany, sealing the victory and leaving Nigeria with an uphill battle to progress from the group stage.
With the 3-1 loss, Nigeria faces a must-win situation in their final group match against Venezuela to secure qualification for the next round.
