FG Launches Committee to Tackle Housing Deficit, Aims at Strategic Policy Formation

Ahmed Dangiwa, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, has launched a Joint Steering Committee to address Nigeria’s growing housing deficit. During the inauguration on Tuesday, Dangiwa emphasized that this initiative is a collaborative effort among key stakeholders aimed at developing a comprehensive blueprint for transparent and accessible housing data.

Dangiwa highlighted the critical lack of accurate housing data in Nigeria, calling it a “national emergency for the sector.” He stated, “Without data, we cannot understand the scale of the problem, allocate resources effectively, or make informed decisions. This is not sustainable.”

The committee has been given six months to establish a framework for collecting, sharing, and utilizing housing data from various sources, including setting up a mortgage exchange. The findings will be crucial for policy formulation and decision-making, with the ultimate goal of providing affordable housing for Nigerians.

Members of the committee include representatives from the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, National Population Commission, National Bureau of Statistics, Central Bank of Nigeria, and other key housing and financial institutions. Dangiwa urged the committee members to approach their duties with diligence and commitment, stressing the importance of their work under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
