FG Extends Rice Subsidy Programme to States
In a bid to combat food insecurity and alleviate the rising cost of living, the Federal Government has announced the expansion of its subsidised rice programme to several states across Nigeria. This initiative, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, aims to provide affordable rice to millions of Nigerians.
The programme, which was initially launched in select regions, will now extend to Lagos, Kano, and Borno states, according to a statement from a director at the ministry on Monday. This expansion is part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure food availability and affordability amidst economic challenges.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, emphasized the importance of this initiative during a recent press briefing. “Our goal is to make staple foods like rice accessible to all Nigerians, especially those in vulnerable communities. By extending the subsidy programme, we are taking a significant step towards achieving food security and supporting our citizens,” Kyari stated.
The subsidised rice will be sold at designated outlets in the newly included states, with the government ensuring that the distribution process is transparent and efficient. This move is expected to provide relief to many households struggling with high food prices.
Economic analysts have welcomed the programme’s expansion, noting that it could help stabilize food prices and reduce the financial burden on families. However, they also caution that the government must address potential logistical challenges to ensure the programme’s success.
As the Federal Government continues to roll out this initiative, stakeholders and citizens alike will be closely monitoring its impact on food security and the overall economy. The coming months will be crucial in determining the effectiveness of this expanded subsidy programme in mitigating food insecurity in Nigeria.
