In a significant move aimed at reducing the stigma associated with mental health care, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to rename all Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospitals (FNPH) as Speciality Hospitals. This initiative, spearheaded by the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, is part of a broader effort to ensure that Nigerians can access mental health services without fear of judgment or discrimination.

Dr. Alausa revealed this plan on his social media handle, emphasizing that the name change is intended to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals seeking mental health care. He noted that the stigma often linked to psychiatric hospitals can deter people from seeking the help they need, and this rebranding is a step towards changing that narrative.

The Minister also highlighted his recent visits to various Federal Tertiary Hospitals, including the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Kaduna, where he commissioned new facilities such as an Electronic Health Record Office and an Alternative Power Supply. These visits are part of the government’s four-point agenda to improve governance and healthcare infrastructure across the country.

This rebranding effort is expected to be formalized through an executive order, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing mental health services and promoting a more compassionate approach to mental health care in Nigeria.
