Federal Government Disburses N1 Trillion to Combat Insecurity in Six Months

In a significant effort to address the escalating security challenges, the Federal Government of Nigeria disbursed a staggering N1.03 trillion between January and June 2024. This substantial allocation aimed to bolster the fight against insecurity and terrorism across the nation.

Despite this substantial investment, the grim reality remains: during the first seven months of 2024, no fewer than 5,801 Nigerians lost their lives in terrorist attacks, and 4,348 citizens were abducted. These incidents occurred across 574 Local Government Areas, underscoring the severity of the crisis. Geographically, the North-East bore the brunt, with 2,223 fatalities, while the North-West and North-Central regions also experienced significant violence.

Insecurity continues to hinder socio-economic development in Nigeria, affecting various aspects of daily life. The threats emanate from multiple sources, including terrorism, banditry, cattle rustling, and kidnapping for ransom. Despite the government’s commitment to tackling these challenges, insurgents persistently operate with relative ease, necessitating further comprehensive security measures.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government disbursed a total of N9.53 trillion to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) during the same period. These funds supported operational activities and infrastructure development across the country, leaving a balance of N29.3 trillion from the total appropriation of N38.83 trillion.

The battle against insecurity remains an urgent priority, demanding sustained efforts and strategic interventions to safeguard lives and restore peace and stability in Nigeria.
