Falconets’ U-20 Women’s World Cup Campaign Ends in 2-1 Defeat to Japan
Nigeria’s Super Falconets were eliminated from the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup following a 2-1 loss to Japan in a Round of 16 match held in Bogota on Friday. Despite a spirited late push, Japan’s early control and clinical finishing proved decisive, earning them a spot in the quarter-finals.
From the onset, Japan set the pace, utilizing quick passes and intelligent movement to challenge Nigeria’s defense. The pressure almost paid off in the 13th minute when Nigerian goalkeeper Faith Omilana misjudged a cross, but Comfort Folorunsho managed to clear the ball off the line, keeping the score level. Japan’s persistent attacking was rewarded in the 33rd minute when Miyu Matsunaga opened the scoring with a header, expertly finishing a well-delivered cross from Rihona Ujihara. Nigeria, renowned for their resilience, came close to equalizing before halftime when Rofiat Imuran’s dangerous cross was narrowly cleared by Maya Hijikata, after Japan’s goalkeeper, Akana Okuma, was tested.
In the second half, Japan maintained their momentum. Maya Hijikata extended their lead in the 66th minute, finishing a precise cross from Chinari Sasai to make it 2-0. Although Omilana made several key saves to deny Matsunaga and Suzu Amano, the Falconets struggled to match Japan’s energy and technical skill throughout the game. Nigeria managed to pull one back in stoppage time when Olushola Shobowale connected with a cross from substitute Goodness Osigwe and calmly placed the ball into the net. However, the late goal was not enough to spark a full comeback, and Japan held on for a 2-1 victory. With this result, Japan advances to face Spain in the quarter-finals, while Nigeria’s impressive run in Colombia ends in disappointment but with a sense of pride in their performance.
