“Eguavoen Sends Strong Message to Rohr’s Benin Ahead of Crucial AFCON Qualifier: ‘This is Our Home'”

Interim Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen has delivered a firm message ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Benin Republic.

The 2013 AFCON champions are set to face a Benin side managed by former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr in their opening qualifier, with the Nigerian team determined to start the campaign on a strong note.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Eguavoen underscored that while Nigeria would respect their opponents, they are fully committed to defending their home ground with determination and intensity.

“Nigeria is a country that commands respect from many others, and this situation is no different,” Eguavoen said. “I am confident we will successfully navigate these two games and beyond. We have the talent, the players, the staff, and the support needed to achieve our goals.”

He continued, “We need to remind these players that not long ago, they were almost African champions. It hasn’t even been a year since then. So, what went wrong? It’s still the same group of players. As the technical crew, we will do everything within our power, and of course, the Federation and Nigerians will be there to support them. They have the ability to turn things around.”

The former KAA Gent defender expressed strong belief in the team’s potential to deliver a positive result and bring pride to the nation.

“I have spoken to the players, and we will continue to hold meetings. I am confident they will step up and make the country proud,” Eguavoen said.

However, he emphasized the need for respect, stating, “We will approach Benin with the utmost respect. If you underestimate your opponents, you will face problems. We will play them with great respect, but this is our home.”

The Super Eagles, led by vice-captain William Troost-Ekong, along with 19 other players, are in Uyo preparing for the upcoming clash.
