Eguavoen Addresses Adarabioyo Speculation Ahead of AFCON Qualifiers
Interim head coach of the Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen, has provided clarity on the situation regarding Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo and his potential inclusion in Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Despite increasing rumors suggesting that Adarabioyo might receive his first call-up, Eguavoen stated that he has not had direct communication with the 27-year-old defender. “I didn’t speak with Tosin, but he’s a good player,” Eguavoen remarked. He emphasized that Adarabioyo is among the players being monitored, highlighting that all Nigerians, regardless of where they play, have the right to represent Nigeria.
Adarabioyo, who was born in London to Nigerian parents, is eligible to play for both England and Nigeria. Following his exclusion from England’s squad for the 2024 European Championship, there are indications that he may be considering a commitment to Nigeria.
Although Eguavoen confirmed that Adarabioyo is under consideration, it seems unlikely he will be included in the squad for the upcoming doubleheader against Libya. Instead, the coach is expected to rely on the established defensive trio of William Troost-Ekong, Semi Ajayi, and Calvin Bassey, who played pivotal roles in Nigeria’s recent victories, including a 3-0 win over Benin Republic and a goalless draw against Rwanda.
Eguavoen noted, “The same approach applies; the players were willing to perform then and remain committed now. Ultimately, it’s up to them, and we can only advise.” This suggests a desire for consistency in his defensive lineup.
Currently, the Super Eagles lead Group D with four points from two matches and aim to strengthen their position with successive wins against Libya next month, potentially securing their qualification for AFCON 2024.
