In a significant development, a Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the Nigeria Police Force permission to remand 124 individuals arrested during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests. The court’s decision allows for a 60-day detention period while investigations into the suspects’ alleged activities continue.
Justice Emeka Nwite, presiding over the case, ruled on separate ex-parte motions filed by Ibrahim Mohammed, counsel for the Inspector-General of Police. The suspects, ranging in age from 14 to 34 years, face allegations of acts of terrorism, treason, and treasonable felonies, as well as arson and terrorism. The police cited relevant sections of various statutes to support their case.
The court further ordered that the minor suspects be remanded in the Borstal Home of the correctional center pending the conclusion of the investigation. The Inspector-General of Police had filed the motion seeking the remand of 75 protesters, and the court granted the request based on credible intelligence reports of a planned violent uprising against the government of the states and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
