Como Secures First Serie A Win in 23 Years Against Atalanta

In a landmark match at Gewiss Stadium, Como 1907 achieved a historic 3-2 victory over Atalanta, marking their first Serie A win in over two decades.

The match showcased Como’s resilience and attacking strength, featuring three goals in a thrilling 12-minute span that shifted the momentum against a strong Atalanta team.

Cesc Fabregas, who took the helm as Como’s head coach in July 2024, expressed his pride after the match, stating, “It feels amazing to lead this team to such a historic victory,” emphasizing the significance of the win for the club.

Fabregas, who previously served as assistant coach, played a pivotal role in Como’s promotion to Serie A last season. The club officially announced his appointment on a four-year contract, aiming to revitalize their performance in the top tier.

Originally scheduled for Monday evening, the match was postponed due to heavy rain in the Bergamo area, leading to a Tuesday kickoff. Both coaches, Gian Piero Gasperini of Atalanta and Fabregas, retained their starting lineups despite the delay.

Atalanta opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Davide Zappacosta scored with a half-volley from the edge of the box, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

Como responded with determination, creating several opportunities, including attempts from Patrick Cutrone and Sergi Roberto, both of which were saved by Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi. By halftime, Como had recorded five shots, three of which were on target, demonstrating their growing confidence.

The second half began with a bang for Como, leveling the score just 20 seconds in. A clever flick from Sergi Roberto set up Gabriel Strefezza, who fired a powerful shot past Carnesecchi.

Como took the lead in the 52nd minute when a long-range shot from Nico Paz deflected off Sead Kolasinac, resulting in an own goal. Just two minutes later, Paz assisted Alieu Fadera, who skillfully converted the opportunity, extending Como’s lead to 3-1.

Despite being behind, Atalanta continued to press, and their efforts led to a penalty awarded in the seventh minute of injury time after debutant Vanja Vlahovic was fouled in the box. Ademola Lookman, who had recently come on as a substitute, converted the penalty, narrowing Como’s lead to 3-2. However, it was not enough, as the match concluded shortly after, securing a memorable win for Como.
