Christ Embassy Building in Lagos Faces Potential Demolition After Sunday Fire, Pending Safety Tests

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has indicated that the Christ Embassy building on Billings Way, Oregun, Ikeja, could face demolition if it fails an upcoming integrity test.

The building was severely damaged by a fire in the early hours of Sunday.

LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, announced the possibility of demolition while addressing journalists at the scene. “We have observed numerous structural defects, including cracks in the walls,” Oke-Osanyintolu explained. “We will conduct an integrity test on the building to determine the appropriate course of action. If it is deemed unsafe, we will proceed accordingly.” Despite the severity of the fire, no casualties were reported.

The rapid response was facilitated by the church’s cooperation and basic firefighting equipment on site, although the presence of highly flammable materials intensified the blaze.

Rev. Chris Oyakhilome, President and founder of LoveWorld Incorporated, also known as Christ Embassy, responded to the incident during a live Sunday service at the church’s campground in Asese, Ogun State. “Now that this has happened, we will build a bigger, better, and more glorious one,” he proclaimed, emphasizing his resilience and determination.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) also highlighted that the absence of worshippers at the time of the fire prevented potential casualties. “At the time of the fire, there were no worshippers in the building, which helped to prevent casualties,” noted Ibitayo Adenike, Head of NEMA’s Search and Rescue Unit.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. “The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigations are underway,” stated LSFRS Director Margaret Adeseye.

As the integrity test looms, the future of the Christ Embassy building remains uncertain, but Rev. Oyakhilome’s vision for a grander structure promises a resilient rebound for the congregation.
