Carlos Alcaraz beats Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz defended his men’s singles title by beating Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon.

The repeat of last year’s final failed to match the impressive five-set performance of the previous 12 months; Djokovic looked almost helpless against the big Spaniard. Having spent three match points to achieve victory, Alcaraz raised his arm in the third hour tiebreaker to win 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-4).

“Honestly, winning this award is a dream for me,” Alcaraz said. “I was interviewed when I was 11 and said my dream was to win Wimbledon.” To hug. Djokovic is trying to equal Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon men’s titles for the second year in a row.

The 24-time Grand Slam winner also surpassed Margaret Court and holds the all-time record for the number of Grand Slam singles titles. To celebrate his 14th consecutive Wimbledon, as is now tradition, Alcaraz climbed into the players’ box and was jumped by his team and family.

This result extended the four-time Grand Slam champion’s 100% winning record in the Grand Slam final. He also became the youngest player to win Wimbledon and the French Open in the same year.

Alcaraz has looked unconvincing in many matches this year; He won two games in a row before last Sunday. He must be strong and fight throughout the tournament against Daniil Medvedev, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe to keep his title defense alive. This made him run all the way even at his best; his thoughts did not say that death was the mark of a true champion.

Last Sunday Alcaraz showed that he saved his best tennis for the last, most important moment. His small shots, perfect volleys and stunning forehand winner seemed to surprise his 37-year-old opponent.

Following in the footsteps of his compatriot and hero Rafael Nadal in 2008 and 2010, Alcaraz achieved the same rare feat at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year.
