Canada Olympic Team Penalized with Six-Point Deduction, Coach Bev Priestman Suspended for Drone Incident
Canada’s women’s national team coach Bev Priestman was banned for a year by FIFA and the team was deducted six points due to the scandal.
FIFA suspended Canada’s Priestman and deducted 6 points from the senior Olympic team after a drone flew over the training ground against New Zealand before the World Cup.
It is claimed that the team used technology before the 2021 race and achieved a good result, but the point deductions will affect their chances of winning again.
Canada’s drone flight took place three days before the start of the Olympic Games and New Zealand filed a complaint regarding the use of drones. Joseph Lombardi, a “discredited analyst”, was arrested by French police after filming another meeting in New Zealand.
Lombardi and assistant coach Jasmine Mander were immediately removed from the Olympic team, while Priest was suspended. FIFA is now very serious about this team.
FIFA made the following statement:
“It was determined that the Canadian Football Association (CSA) did not comply with FIFA regulations and that efforts were made to ban the use of drones by OFT members in any training. “Canadian Football took swift action to remove the officials involved and is conducting an independent review which will result in further disciplinary action.
We thank Canadian fans for their understanding during this time and support for our players. Even with the points withdrawn, Canada still has a chance to qualify from the group stage as Canada will need to win at least one more match in the Europa Cup, as Group 3 will still advance.
