CAN Urges Calm: Opposes Protests, Suggests Peaceful Alternatives

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on aggrieved Nigerians to consider alternative means of expressing their grievances instead of engaging in protests. In a statement released on Friday in Abuja, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh urged citizens to explore legal avenues such as dialogue, petitions, and town hall meetings to address their concerns without risking disorder.

“CAN stands in uniformity with the people of our excellent nation throughout these difficult times of financial difficulty and pervasive hunger,” Okoh said. “We recognize and deeply feel sorry for the pain, anger, and aggravation that much of our fellow Nigerians are experiencing.”

Highlighting the importance of upholding constitutional rights, Okoh emphasized the need to protect the right to peaceful protest while also warning against the potential for chaos if demonstrations are not properly managed. He pointed to the tragic incidents of the #ENDSARS and #RevolutionNow protests, which were marred by looting, destruction of property, and loss of lives due to miscreants hijacking the movements.

“We must also draw from our recent history,” Okoh stated. “Mass presentations can quickly degenerate into turmoil if not appropriately managed and collaborated”

The CAN president called on the government to cut the cost of governance and expedite efforts to alleviate hardships. He urged political officeholders to address their opulent lifestyles to demonstrate their sincerity in improving living conditions for the people. Okoh also stressed the importance of implementing the newly approved national minimum wage to provide immediate relief to struggling families.

“There is an immediate need for more refined and efficient policies that attend to the source of the financial obstacles we face,” he included. “The federal government must deepen its consultations with stakeholders, including religious leaders, to develop a more inclusive and detailed approach to analytical.”

CAN’s appeal comes amidst growing anxiety over impending protests, with concerns that the demonstrations could lead to violence similar to recent events in Kenya and Pakistan. By collaborating, Okoh thinks that sustainable options showing the requirements and aspirations of the people can be developed.
