British High Commissioner Explores Economic Partnership Opportunities in Abia

The British High Commissioner, Dr. Richard Montgomery, visited Umuahia, Abia State between August 20 and 21, 2024. During this high-level visit, Dr. Montgomery engaged in discussions with the state governor, key government stakeholders, and business leaders. The purpose? To explore potential areas of economic partnership between the United Kingdom (UK) and Abia State.

Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, the Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer at the British High Commission (BHC), emphasized the importance of this visit. She highlighted that Abia State plays a crucial role in boosting Nigeria’s economic prosperity, and the UK is committed to driving growth in the region. Dr. Montgomery’s interactions with local leaders aimed to enhance collaboration and prosperity.

During his two-day visit, Dr. Montgomery participated in various activities. Notably, he attended the graduation ceremony of the State-Level Inclusive Digital Transformation Programme, which was funded through the UK’s Digital Access Programme (DAP). This program aims to bridge the digital skills gap by providing relevant and applicable digital training for the state’s civil servants.

Additionally, Dr. Montgomery visited the Geometric Power Company, met with the team developing the Abia Innovation Industrial Park, and engaged with the Aba Chamber of Commerce. He also explored opportunities for growth and partnerships with UK businesses, seeking insights and advice on advancing UK investment in the state.

Mark Smithson, the UK’s Country Director for the Department for Business and Trade, expressed optimism about supporting Abia’s government and private sector in driving trade. He emphasized the desire to strengthen ties and collaborate for mutual prosperity between the UK and Abia State.
