BREAKING NEWS: Telcos Begin Disconnection of Phone Lines Not Linked to NIN

Telecommunications operators in Nigeria have commenced the disconnection of mobile phone lines that are not linked to National Identification Numbers (NIN). This action follows the expiration of the September 14 deadline set by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for all subscribers to complete their NIN-SIM linkage.

The NCC had previously extended the deadline multiple times to accommodate subscribers facing challenges with the linkage process. However, with the latest deadline now passed, approximately 66 million unlinked lines are at risk of being disconnected. As of March 2024, there were 219 million active lines across major networks such as MTN, Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile, with 153 million already linked to NIN.

An NCC official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that there would be no further extensions. “We will disconnect anyone who refuses to comply; the grace period is over,” the official stated¹. The disconnection process is expected to cause significant disruptions, as millions of subscribers may find their lines barred.

Subscribers have expressed frustration over the challenges they face in completing the NIN-SIM linkage, citing issues with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) portal and other technical difficulties. Despite these challenges, the NCC has emphasized the importance of compliance to ensure the integrity of the telecommunications system.
