Benin Republic Defeats Nigeria In Shocking Upset 2-1

Surprisingly, Nigerian Super Eagles suffered a heartbreaking defeat against the Beninese Cheetahs in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, leaving their promotion hopes hanging in the balance. While Benin won the match played in Abidjan 2-1, Super Eagles’ only goal came from Nigerian Raphael Onedika.

The defeat was Nigeria’s fourth consecutive winless streak in qualifiers against Lesotho, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The Super Eagles are currently in an unstable situation, sitting second from the bottom in Group C with just 3 points from four games. Although Nigeria’s situation is difficult, their chances of promotion have not disappeared.

While Lesotho is the leader in the group, only 2 points ahead of Nigeria, Super Eagles have a chance to close the gap in their next match against Lesotho. But they need to win convincingly and hope the other results go their way. Losing to Benin is a big problem for Nigeria, which does not want to miss its second World Cup. Super Eagles have failed to qualify for the 2022 Qatar Championship and if they fail again it will cause a major crisis for the team and the fans.

Nigeria coach Finidi George must regroup and find a way to turn his fortunes around. The Super Eagles struggled to score goals and their defense was questioned, conceding a goal in each of their qualifying matches. The task facing Nigeria is difficult but not impossible. They need to win their remaining matches and hope the other teams in the group make mistakes. The road ahead is tough, but the Super Eagles have the talent and determination to turn things around.

Nigeria’s next match is against Lesotho, a must-win match for the Super Eagles. They need to do their best to get three points and keep their hopes high. This match promises to be an exciting match with both teams hungry for victory. Nigeria’s defeat to Benin Republic was a huge setback but it was not the end for the Super Eagles.

They still have a chance of qualifying for the World Cup, but it will require great effort from the team and the coach. The next few games will be important and Nigerian fans will be waiting with bated breath in the hope that their team can turn their fortunes around and qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
