Bayelsa Boat Tragedy: Maritime Union Calls for Life Jacket Enforcement

A devastating boat accident in Bayelsa State has claimed the lives of at least 20 people. The incident occurred when the engine of a wooden boat, locally known as a “Denghe,” exploded in the middle of the river and caused the vessel to sink near Ezetu I community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

The ill-fated boat was on its way from Ekene, along the Atlantic fringe of the council area, to Yenagoa when tragedy struck. Occupants of the boat, mainly market women, faced a horrifying situation as the vessel caught fire after the engine malfunctioned. The sole survivor, currently in critical condition, is receiving medical attention at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital in Okolobiri, Yenagoa.

The Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union in Bayelsa State, Ipgansi Ogoniba, confirmed the accident and highlighted the need for stricter adherence to safety protocols. He emphasized the importance of wearing life jackets while onboard and urged boat operators to prioritize passenger safety. The tragedy underscores the urgency of enforcing maritime safety regulations.

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) plays a crucial role in ensuring maritime safety. SOLAS sets comprehensive safety standards for ships, including requirements for life-saving equipment like life jackets, lifeboats, and distress signals. Properly fitting life jackets can significantly increase the chances of survival during emergencies at sea.

Governor Douye Diri expressed sadness over the accident, and the Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area described it as a great loss to the victims’ families and the community.
