Actress Olivia Hussey Passes Away at 73
Olivia Hussey, the celebrated actress who gained international fame as a teenager for her role as Juliet in the 1968 film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, has passed away at the age of 73.
The Argentinian-born actress, who was raised in London, died on Friday surrounded by her family, according to a statement shared on her Instagram account.
Hussey won a Golden Globe for Best New Actress for her portrayal of Juliet, a role that catapulted her to stardom. However, decades later, she sued Paramount Pictures, citing sexual exploitation over a nude scene filmed when she was just 15 years old.
One of her other most notable roles was playing Mary, the mother of Jesus, in the 1977 TV miniseries Jesus of Nazareth.
“As we mourn this profound loss, we also celebrate Olivia’s lasting impact on our lives and the entertainment industry,” her family wrote in the statement.
Early Life and Career
Hussey was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1951. She moved to London at the age of seven and trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. At 15, she was discovered by director Franco Zeffirelli while performing on stage alongside Vanessa Redgrave in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
Zeffirelli cast Hussey as Juliet in his cinematic adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, believing her youth would lend authenticity to the role. She starred opposite Leonard Whiting, a 16-year-old British actor cast as Romeo.
The film received critical acclaim, earning Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. While Hussey did not receive an Academy Award nomination, she won the Golden Globe for Best New Star.
Legal Battle with Paramount
Decades later, Hussey and her co-star Leonard Whiting filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures, alleging that Zeffirelli, who passed away in 2019, pressured them into performing nude scenes despite prior assurances they would not have to. They sought damages of over $500 million, citing emotional distress and the film’s ongoing profitability. However, the case was dismissed last year, with the court ruling that the scene was not “sufficiently sexually suggestive.”
Other Roles and Legacy
In 1977, Hussey reunited with Zeffirelli to portray the Virgin Mary in Jesus of Nazareth, a performance that earned her critical praise. She later appeared in Death on the Nile (1978), based on Agatha Christie’s novel, and gained recognition in the horror genre with roles in Black Christmas (1974) and Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990), where she played Norman Bates’s mother in a prequel storyline.
In addition to her on-screen work, Hussey enjoyed a successful career as a voice actress, contributing to various video games.
In 2015, she reunited with her Romeo and Juliet co-star Leonard Whiting for the British film Social Suicide, a modern retelling of the Shakespearean classic set in the era of social media.
A Lasting Legacy
Hussey’s work continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, from her iconic portrayal of Juliet to her contributions to other genres. Her family and fans remember her for her immense talent and enduring contributions to cinema.
