2024 NBA Conference: Stop Stealing Our National Assets, Okonjo-Iweala Tells Political Office-Holders

The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, delivered a powerful keynote address at the ongoing 2024 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). In her speech titled ‘A Social Contract for Nigeria’s Future,’ she emphasized the urgent need for policy consistency and accountability across administrations.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala urged political office holders to abandon the destructive habit of looting the nation’s assets. She highlighted Nigeria’s stagnation despite its immense potential, emphasizing that the country has not progressed as it should have over the past 60 years of independence. She stated:

“That is why, more than 60 years after independence, the NBA and all general conferences are still looking at things like rebuilding Nigeria, charting a course for nation building.”

She called for a shift in focus from blame games to constructive dialogue on tackling present and emerging problems. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala reminded everyone that Nigeria’s economy is diversified and capable of achieving much more in terms of agricultural exports, critical minerals, and services.

The conference attendees listened attentively as she emphasized the need for a new social contract—one that ensures transparency, responsible governance, and a brighter future for Nigeria’s youth. Her words resonated with urgency, urging political leaders to prioritize the nation’s interests over personal gain¹m.
